Ahoy!
Not piping up for luddite nor old fashioned ways, by cracky but, in college and salad days when confronted with lack of availability and lack of funds, I some of us, would make cleats from chunks of leather or thick rubber soles or worn out shoes and work boots or even auto tires. Yeah, sounds kind of screwy but, the sense of bike simple independence was great. I suppose one could really push the sanity envelope, as did one of our group who not only carved leather cleats but tacked them onto bowling shoes. Brunswick 'tweren't Detto but, seemed to work for him.
