Howard,
Sterritania Bike shop outside of Erie? Are we talking upper Peach Street, maybe a mile north of the I-90 interchange? If so, that's John D'Angelo's old shop, Atala, Fuji, and (big mistake) Lambert back in the early 70's.
Gotta admit the name caught me a bit short - then again, I moved out by June '77, and most of that year was spent on a motorcycle.

Any ideas on toes that go numb.
Size 12 American and a very high arch have made finding shoes that fit problematic. Size (d) width is a tad too narrow. Wider shoes (e) are often not snug enough in the ankle.
I have a pair of performance touring shoes from about 1987. They have the ribs. I found them ok.
Bata bikers have so far been my best choice. First pair was purchased in 1977 at Sterritania Bike shop outside of Erie Pa (Hey Syke) I liked the shallow diamond sort of pattern on the Bata's best. The pedal plates wore groves that approximated the function of cleats into the rubber sole precisely where I needed it.
