Wasn't it a reasonably common practice to stick a piece of broomhandle into the steerer tubes of the old Paris-Roubaix bikes, so that in the event of a broken steerer tube, everything would remain somewhat intact for a short time? It (or a modern substitute, no doubt made of carbon fiber) might have saved George's shoulder.
