This thread is cracking me up! The double twists and backtracks are hilarious. "I can finally be the poseur I always wished I was." LOL!!! And the idea of "Thank goodness for all the rich people who never rode their bikes!" It's rich! And twisted, at the same time. Textbook irony?
30 years from now will there be Trek Madone's going for $100 in garage sales? Probably so!
I've found dollar-bin handmade Italian leather bike shoes (tri-colored Maressis, I think. Lovely!). But my cousin is just now giving me a pair of $300 carbon shoes coz they don't fit right. When I first started racing in the late 70's I heard of riders getting cheap handmade bikes secondhand from top racers. Well, my most recent top racer pal sells his 15-lb Giants for $500 to pals after the season. (Of course much wonder stuff won't hold up well---but then most of it won't get used much.)
The merging worlds of activities AND collecting AND fads AND "one man's trash is another's..." and all their merging and diverging values is ripe for these kinds of ironies.
