Dale,
Ambrosio made a disc in 1982 that weighed 3178 grams. That's 7 pounds in layman's terms. They were made from thick sheet aluminum. Very nice to go down hill with. Fir also made several front 26" discs that were bulbous in shape during the same time period. Then there were the discs that came from an Eyetalian Mfg that had calibrated weights on slides in them. The faster the wheel turned, the farther out the weights went to the rim, allowing the wheel to build more speed.

Ken:
I am seriously in doubt that there were disc wheels on of before 1983 that were available to the public... But I could be wrong (No wisecracks please out there) Or these could be some on-offs...
So, someone with a better memory or more real knowledge fill us all in please...

A friend is getting ready to sell a time trial bike that he bought a couple of years ago but wants to know what type of disc wheels he has.
I'm sure the bike is within the time line and I'm thinking that the wheels are as well.
When he bought the bike, the previous owner said that the wheels were made by Moon Equipment, the car accessory company that had the moon eye decals but there is no identification on them. They appear to be a type of fibreglass disc that has been permanently bonded to a normal spoke wheel. They are extremely heavy; the front weighs 8 pounds with a tubular glued on. He has contacted Moon but they are under new owners and don't have any information. He'd like to be able to accurately describe the bike when it goes up for sale.
I do have some photos of the wheels that I could email anyone who was interested.
I thought maybe some of the old racers may have heard of these.
