They came both ways. The right-side partner (which was used to repair my brother's 1982 Gitane TdF)to the one in my picture was threaded; the one on my Gitane tandem was not, but the tandem one also has a 12mm slot for an oversize axle -- not sure if Gitane milled out stock DOs for this or if Simplex made a special tandem dropout.
