Back in the day, all good mechanics I knew believed that the shoes were supposed to be slid as far into the eyebolts as they would go, so the back of the shoe holder was bumping up against the side of the brake arm. Extending the shoe as a means of adjusting the clearance was considered mono-buttocked at best.

With newer cantilevers, this was not the case, and they are intended to use the shaft extension as an adjustment.

Make sure you have lubricated the threads on the eyebolts in any case.
