Before you make any assumptions about the crank-arms being
damaged, consider first the response sent by Chuck Brooks.
Also, if you read nothing else in my message, please read the
comments I have hear the end...
So, in my experience, the number on earlier Campagnolo
spindles relates to the over-lock-nut dimension of the rear
wheel and, therefore indirectly, the chainline. (On later
Campagnolo spindles, the number related to the width of the BB
shell.) The earliest Campy track hubs were for frames with
110mm spacing at the rear and crank spindles were about 105mm
long.
Here's why I think your whole situation is a bit confusing:
those shorter spindle were meant for frames with narrower
bottom bracket shells than the 68mm shell that I suspect is on
your Raleigh. But my recollection is that those shorter
spindles were meant to be used with thin-wall cups. So I
wouldn't be surprised if, the reason this thing even fits on
your frame at all right now, is that you're using thick wall
(i.e. NR) cups. Otherwise, the adjustable cup would be too far
into the frame to accept a lock ring.
Does that sound reasonable? If not, please let me know,
because I'd be interested in learning what the true story would
be.
