Dave Bohm's work on the lugs and BB, and those photos of a raw Fischer BB reminded me of a story by David Brin called "The Practice Effect." Brin wonders what a world would be like if entropy, the natural tendency for things to get used up and fall apart didn't exist. Instead things got better as they were used more: the practice effect, as in practice makes perfect. In this world, the highest calling was to be a "maker," someone who created things. However the makers were not craftsmen, they just cobbled things together in a very rough fashion, and let the users improve them through use. It would be like buying a Free Spirit, and riding it until it became a Masi (I know at this point someone will say "or riding it longer until it became a _____") Anyway you get the point. Rich people could afford to employ others to wear their new clothes until they had improved enough to be comfortable.

What you see in the pictures posted are the RGF BB shell and Bacomma lugs being worked-up for the frame. The BB shell in particular reinforces how rough they were before a frame builder went to work on them, and how far they come for a finished product on a quality custom frame. For this particular project, Dave has documented the process in photos, which gives us a rare look into what goes into a very special frame built with vintage components.
