Some, like Gillott, made oversize top tube models to make them track better on swift decents among other things.
If I recall correctly, much more recently, Gary Klein, working in aluminum, made a name for his bikes using oversize down tubes on his Klein Quantum Pros.
Two Questions:
1. What would the comparative advantages/disadvantages be of using oversize top tubes vs. oversize down tubes?
2. Did any of the classic lightweight builders try oversized down tubes with any marked benefit?
