By the way, "ship-boy" is the hub! That is, the original
Italian must have said "mozzo". Never having been in any of
the Italian maritime services, I have no idea why the word for
hub came to be synonymous with cabin-boy. It strikes me that
Mozzo is related to the French word for hub, Moyeu. But I
don't think that the French word has any nautical implications.
