I believe that was pretty much standard, both for Sturmey-Archer-type hubs, and for 3- or 4-speed derailers.

No argument here: I have 2 bikes of this vintage that have 114mm
spacing. I know that I also asked the question a couple of years ago on
the CR list, about 114mm, before I became an enlightened being in this
respect, got no answer at the time, and was mystified that there was no
reference to 114mm on the Harris web-page that covered hub spacings.
As of tonight, I note that Harris's crib sheet on rear spacing still
jumps from 110mm all the way to 120mm, with no mention of any
intermediate step.
