The Weinmann brand seems to have been devalued here in the UK also, probably, as Fred says, they produced large quantities of low-priced equipment, which appeared on low-end machines. This wasn't always the case: in the 1952 Brown Brothers catalogue, they cost more than any other caliper brakes, including GB, Strata, Alp, Phillips, Monitor or Webb.
