Jimmy Saville Born in Leeds in 1926, Jimmy was the youngest of 7 children. His first job at 14 was as a coalface worker he was a Bevin Boy, then scrap metal seller. Semi-Pro racing cyclist 1951 Tour of Britain I think he raced under the name of Oscar Saville but this might have been his nickname, he also used "Duke". He used to all-in wrestle two nights a week. His first taste of the 'pop' industry was as an assistant manager for Leeds Locarno (Mecca Club). He later shot to fame on Radio Luxembourg in the 1960's with shows Teen and Twenty Disc Club, and Guys Gals and Groups. He was voted top British disc jockey for several years in that decade, by various magazines.
Cycling Career took part in the 1951 Daily Express Tour of Britain and was shot out the back on the 1st stage London-Hastings-Brighton. He missed the boat that took the riders across the Bristol Channel for the starton Stage 5 Cardiff-Wolverhampton and he had a hair-raising car journey to the start. On Stage 8 Newcastle-Scarborough he finally packed and the cigar smoking "Duke" Oscar or Jimmy Saville became the non stop talking race announcer. Best wishes Bert Palmer Greenford U.K.
