Nice thread about safety levers. I always thought the concept was sound as they let you change to a different riding position. As I recall, there wasn't much of a choice in handlebars back then, so if you wanted a fairly lightweight bike, but wanted to ride more upright, the levers were a good compromise. Too bad, more R&D could have produced a better and more functional design. If only Campy had gotten in to it. Many of the novice riders that had us remove them from their budget bikes never took to serious cycling anyway and came back to the shop to have us install those big wide cushy saddles.
