So how does two layers help, versus, say one thicker layer? If you put a layer on the tire and a layer on the rim, then mount the tire, you wind up with one layer anyway. Is there some science here, or just a lot of myth?

At least a layer of glue on the tire and one on the rim. If you weren't using fast-tack you didn't ride the tire the next day. If you were you got by. This was not an small issue but a constant topic of discussion, at least in the 70's and early 80's. If you rolled a tube in a crit you brought down lots of guys and went home in bandages. No fun. As you appropriately said....better safe than sorry. Edward Albert, riding tubes again after 15 years, in Chappaqua, NY, U.S.A.

I know some people apply multiple layers of glue, but I've never heard a good explanation of why this would be necessary.

Ask anybody who has rolled one. Maybe most weekend riders can get by without the extra glue, but add in some fast descents, brake heat, and a strong

rider and it is better to be safe than sorry. I witnessed a list member roll a tubbie a couple years back. It was an ugly digger and yard sale. I think he's mostly all clincher now.
