My temptation would be to find a structurally strong cartridge bottom bracket with deep threaded cups like an Edco and then use a strong Locktite to install. Not the usual red or blue stuff. Given it is a chromed frame I don't think heat would hurt the finish to break the Locktite should it need to be removed.
