Yes. Cut the appropriate length off the top of the barrel and the bottom of the plunger. Sand the threads on the bushing down so it will fit into the barrel without cracking it and drill/tap two holes for a couple of short 4-40 flathead screws to secure the bushing in the top of the barrel without having to screw it in. Remove the cut off piece of plunger from the piston and attach the shortened plunger like it was originally using a centre punch. If this isn't clear enough, I'll see if I can post pictures of what I did.

I also secured the bushing of my Silca floor pump this way with a couple of small screws because the bushing kept pulling out of the barrel.
