I have had a hang-up about knickers from childhood growing up in the 30s. My mother bought me suits with knickers which I hated. There was a battle fought every morning when I dressed for school and tried to substitute long corduroy trousers for the knickers with long stockings. On Sundays she added a fedora and tie. I’d tell her I was the only boy in 4th grade still wearing knickers, and that all the other boys wore long trousers. Not true of course. I temporarily solved the problem by stuffing the knickers deep down behind the sofa cushions where they weren’t found till the next spring housecleaning. I wonder how long I’d last on the street today in that outfit.
I suppose if I rode with a congenial group of knicker garbed cyclists, I’d get over it, get in the spirit of it, and wear them as well.
I remember in the 40s seeing groups of Army men from a nearby Army base wearing riding breeches on bicycles. They appeared to be training on them.
