Subject: [CR]Standard front axle diameter

Hello,

I have a 1960s bike with Weinmann 700c wheels, it has a no-name front hub.

The front hub has a steel hub body, with aluminum high flanges pressed onto it. (In case you were interested).

I've measured the solid steel axle and it seems to be 7.9mm.

Modern front axles are 9.0mm IIRC.

A modern front wheel, therefore, will not fit in the drop outs for this bike.

A couple of questions. Are there standards for axle diameter on '60s era hubs with solid axles? And therefore it would be easy to find a period replacement.

Or, to use a modern front wheel, do folks defile their classic front drop outs with a flat file to get 9.0mm.

The wheel works now, but I'd hate to try and find new cones/races when the day comes.
