I grab the stub of cable with Vise-Grips very close to the bottom of the lever, so there's maybe 2-3 mm of cable betwixt the side of the Vise-Grip jaws and the lever. Such a short length of cable is pretty stiff. I then smack the underside of the Vise-Grip with a mallet.
