I believe that an ISO freewheel may well thread onto a french threaded hub without much difficulty - and I bet many folks may even get away with it. But if memory serves me right, the combination is not recomended as there is a definite posibility that under strong load the freewheel threads may not hold and the hub shell will strip - leaving the rider stranded if not on the ground when it gives way.

That said, I bet lots of folks have put ISO or perhaps British freewheels on French threaded hubs (one of the combos does not go on well at all though) and not realized it and gotten away with it.

So there you have it - a non answer! (A sure-fire way to test if a hub is French is to see if a known French threaded freewheel will thread on - if yes you know it is French for sure)

> Hi everybody,

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I have a question (or questions) about freewheel and hub thread

\r?\n> compatibility. But before I ask I will say that I have read Sheldon's site

\r?\n> below and looked at the chart here

\r?\n> http://www.sheldonbrown.com/freewheels.html

\r?\n> Now I have a vintage 70's hub that I believe has french threads although the

\r?\n> hub isn't marked at all. I have taken a SunTour New Winner freewheel that I

\r?\n> know is ISO threaded and I can very easily screw it on, and just as easily

\r?\n> unscrew the freewheel from the hub. The freewheel threads on fully and is

\r?\n> flush with the machined shoulder of the hub. Does my ability to thread on an

\r?\n> ISO freewheel mean that the hub is also ISO or can components with ISO &

\r?\n> French threads be mixed? And if so, does it matter which one is male and

\r?\n> which is female? Looking at Sheldon's page the difference in measurement

\r?\n> between threads is down fractions of a millimeter. I also tried a hub that I

\r?\n> know has Italian threads (because it's marked as such, 35 x 24) with the

\r?\n> same SunTour freewheel and while I can screw it on with little to no

\r?\n> pressure it stops just short of threading on fully or to be flush with the

\r?\n> hub shoulder. So this makes me think that even with such slight differences

\r?\n> in thread pitch that sometimes "close enough" isn't close enough.

\r?\n> So there is my question. Enlightenment needed, please and thank you.
