I have been making and selling Mariposa bikes since 1969. Originally from my store Bicyclesport in downtown Toronto and since 1991 from our present business Bicycle Specialties. Over the years we are often asked if we can produce some good serviceable frames at a lower price than Mariposa. Each Mariposa is and always has, been individually built for a particular customer. This practice increases the cost over batch built frames. A few years ago we decided to make a batch of frames from all the odd tubes that we had accumulated over the years. All good tubing but not sets. A batch of frames was made to stock sizes using a mixture of Columbus and Reynolds 531. We didn't want to sell these under the Mariposa name and decided, after looking into the legality, to resurrect the old Alcyon name. Back in the thirties when Tour de France riders had to ride bikes supplied by the organizers they rode yellow unmarked Alcyons. Our new generation Alcyons were similarly painted yellow. We later had Marinoni build some Alcyons for us. The name continues. Although we haven't produced any lately we intend to get some more made in the not too distant future.
