Don't laugh. I do not know the answer to which is more desirable between the old fish-mouth style lugs or the Nervex spear-point lugs that apparently graced the Rene-Herse bicycles of different eras.

Personally I think the old fish-mouth lugs are quite classy.

On a different note, what does it mean when you find an old frame with a nice paint job yet there are "gaps" between areas of the lugs and a fully inserted tube (be it top tube, seat tube, or down tube?) I trip on how I can stick my fingernail in between said areas. Is this a result of a hack frame-builder? How could the nicer bicycles wind up like this? Doesn't the builder go around the lug with a rubber mallet or something? Or did the builders in the instances described herein just not know how to braze?
