Wikipedia is what it is; American Heritage Dictionary sez the same:
"ETYMOLOGY: Italian, after Ghetto, island near Venice where Jews were made to live in the 16th century"
And, Tom, Wikipedia's got "ghetto" spelled correctly to boot, that'd have gotten Joe Hughes half-way to your concern.
