I think most of us grayheads and near-greyheads can give an at least rough outline of how and when spacing progressed from 120 mm to 130 mm for road bikes. I think the more obscure phase, at least for me, is how it got from 105 to 120. I'd assume the same forces were at work, i.e. the commercial and competitive desires for more drive ratio options, balanced by the need to maintain chainline and wheel integrity.

This Maine Star from the 30s has a rear dropout spacing of 105mm and fork spacing of 95mm. Does anyone have the chronological progression of when spacing changed to the current 130mm/100mm? Lou Deeter, Orlando FL USA
