It appears that the engine is directly geared to the back wheel on the motorcycles, no clutch. Hence, in order to push the motorcycles around easily, you needed to disconnect the chain or pull the plugs.

I thought huge size of the sprockets on some of the bicycles were rather odd. It looked like they were using 68 x 34 tooth gearing, or something like that.
