Note that Roger Riviere is on fixed gear, note only did British (and other english speaking) cyclists use 'fixed' for winter training.

(rode a very hard hilly 25 km Time Trial today on my early '60's Falcon with 72" fixed. Only one of about 3 steel frames amongst the 70 or so Off Topic carbon/alloy disk wheeled tri bar 20 spds. And definitely the only one with fixed gear, a Brooks B17 saddle, Airlite hubs and wingnuts. Oh and thanks to Paul Raley, a nice 4.1/4" GB stem had me properly positioned to honk on the tough uphills and bounce in the saddle at about 150 rpm on the descents.)

Winter Training with Elsy Jacobs

Narbonne-Plage, France, February 1960. Training camp for Roger Rivière and two of his St.Raphaël - Geminiani teammates. Accompanying them on this day is Luxembourg's Elsy Jacobs, 1958 World Road Champion and Women's World Hour Record holder. Jacobs record of 41.347kms, set on 9th November 1958, lasted fourteen years.
>From left to right: Michel Dejouhannet, Elsy Jacobs, Roger Rivière (Men's World Hour Record 1957 & 1959), and Roger Walkowiak (1956 Tour de France winner). Smart-looking mud guards on the bikes of Rivière and Walkowiak. Although all four are riding Geminiani bikes, no two bikes look the same. From "But et Club - Le Miroir des Sports" No.783, 1st February 1960.
