If it weren't for the fact that Dan's name would be associated with the situation and known by the scammer's buddies, it sounds like an excellent opportunity for the cops to snag the guy(s) when he/they come to pick up the merchandise (and refund).

I wonder if advertising something like Dan's bike under an assumed name for the purposes of pulling in such scammers would be considered entrapment.
