Best way to find out is to put some Simichrome on a white cloth and rub the item. If the cloth turns black you are dealing with aluminum that hasn't been anodized... continue polishing. If the cloth doesn't turn black you are dealing with anodized aluminum and you're wasting your time trying to polish it with Simichrome.
