Mark (and John of course),

The 49T would be a common ring for a single track bike; I use 49x15 for an 88 inch gear which is about all I could use on the track myself.

The 54T might be best used on a track tandem or for motor pacing for high speed training. I have track rings in larger sizes up to 55T; and then there's my prized possession in my chainring collection which is a Campagnolo track ring (151 BCD) that is 66T!! I have her mounted on my Cinelli track bike combined with a 12T cog in the rear. Yep, I've ridden the bike that way. Need a motor to draft for best effect. I believe the original intended use for such a ring would be for motorpaced events behind the BIG motorpace machines where speeds could reach 60mph, if I'm not mistaken. Would I go that fast behind a motor on the track? HELL YES, if I had the legs for it!

Brian Baylis La Mesa, CA Pergs may get a taste of the 148.5 gear inches sometime soon.
