You know, you are right, the new IRD FWs are more like the original Shimano FWs that the newer Shimanos!

The Tange levin has been around since the early 1970s although in various forms (appearance/looks.) I just worked on an early 1970s Schwinn Voyager frame that has a Levin hs with a groove or flute around the top 7 bottom bodies... I am not sure when the Campy copy looking versions came out... Then there are plasticky new ones designated as Levins.

Not sure about intro times on thoise Stronglights or the availability of black cages on MYS Sylvans. Dale Brown Greensboro, North Carolina USA

hi Dale and gang,

* how close do the IRD freewheels get to On Topic Shimano freewheels? Shimano had their twist-tooth stuff going during the later OnTopic period.

* regarding headsets, is the Tange Levin considered On Topic? They are still in production, right? How about my favorite, the Stronglight A9? I know that the Stronglight Delta was around in 1989, but have no idea when they first introduced their roller bearing design. The A9 is certainly a favorite of mine for my vintage bikes, owing to its classic looks and ruggedness.

* pedals: are the black cage versions of the MKS Sylvan no longer produced? Or just hard to find?
