Peter,

Actually, I thought of pedal extentions, but the cranks on the bike are Maxiplume cottered alloy with French threads, and the left one is slightly twisted already from when I was young and stronger and didn't spin as much. Putting an extention on a weak crank arm would probably bend it more or break it. The answer, then is to replace only the left crank with a suitable steel one. The extension then could be used, but it may be just as easy to bend the steel crank if I can make it parallel.

Thanks for your suggestion. The folks on the list are very knowlegeable and eager to help, which is much appreciated.

Your problem may be more easily solved by using a "Kneesaver Pedal Saver" adapter which will space your pedal/foot/anklebrace about 1/2 - 5/8" further out from the crank.

I use such an item on the left crank of some of my on topic bikes with non curved/splayed cranks in order that my ankle does not contact the crank due to my splayed feet, the left being even worse than the right.

I obtained these adapters as a left and right set from Elliot Bay Cycles in Seattle WA around 1998, I believe Sheldon Brown has these stocked at Harris Cyclery.
