David, Is the bottom bracket spindle/ spindle taper original to the bike? How close is the clearance between the right chainstay and the inner/small chainring? Is there room to use a shorter (narrower) spindle, or is it that the taper is to great for the crank to be positioned closer to the shell? Does it look like too much clearance there? Is the clearance equal to that on the non-drive side? How does the chain align with the freewheel? That could be an easy obvious "eureka- it must be the spindle". All this if in fact the crank and the front derailleur are correct to the bike. Al Fack, Mankato, Mn. USA
