I must concur to a certain degree. I think a reasonable model here would be the vintage car world. If that GT 40 Ford or Gulf Porsche 917 is in the same livery in which it won Le Mans, than under almost no circumstances should it be re painted. If you happen onto a great barn find and it's "patina-ed", super as long as it's protected and serviceable. But...if there's rust showing through, you could very easily make the argument that is negligent not to repair it and paint it. The rust isn't going to stop just because the owner wants it to.
