That is, for those riders who needed wider cranksets, some remedy was always available. The reverse was not true, and still isn't. In my case, the narrower cranksets are truly preferable and there's no adapter that can make that change. So... while I hate to prolong the debate, I will add this. One reason there might not have been vast amounts of discussion about this in the cycling press, is that for a long time all cranksets had a relatively narrow tread. At least, narrow enough...
