Dale et al,

Region free DVD players that convert PAL to NTSC with NTSC output are readily available and user friendly. And they are ofttimes less expensive (sometimes markedly so) that the Sony/Pioneer/Panasonic etc down at Best Buys. I've been using a Momitsu V880 (US$189) since 2003 with no problems. Here's http://www.hkflix.com/hardware/ one source. The Malata, Momitsu and Oppos are all region free. There are even units available through Amazon.com and elsewhere for less than US$100. Of course, build quality isn't on the same level.

It's a no brainer if you collect films on DVD in addition to cycling and other specialist videos. And just because it's a Region 1 DVD put out in the good ol' USA doesn't mean that another regions' version might not be a superior transfer, particularly in PAL to NTSC conversions that are done on the cheap.

And just to keep it classic - can anyone identify Jean-Claude Brialy's bike leaning against the apartment wall in Godard's /Une Femme est Une Femme/? :-)

> Second, there is dvd ripping/hacking software (dvd decryptor-now illegal) that can "sometimes" re-author programs to region 0...but not always. I don't believe high end dvd authoring systems (Spruce, Apple) can do anything about a disc that's already been authored without the original files.
> Third, if you can access a PAL player (region 2), you can digitize the program chapters at a high resolution into a good digital edit suite (Avid MC or Apple Final Cut or Adobe Premiere), edit and author a new dvd for personal use. Most editing software uses various compression formats on top of your already compressed dvd that was originally encoded from either 24 or 25 frame film or PAL television which can degrade the signal even more.. Bottom line is that good quality is hard to maintain without access to a high end system with 1 to 1 uncompressed video capability. I'm an editor and do this this type of (legal) conversion for broadcast.
