No downtube decals means it was likely a Cupertino Spence Wolf bike - so a call to Vance at Cupertino might settle the date it was sold.

Now I'm not certain, but I believe that some Cinelli frames that were latter (early 70's) did sometimes show up with the fender eye treatment. Perhaps it was specifically requested that way by Spence Wolf. There was actually a bit of customization available it seems - especially with respect to paint and chrome options.

Not an exciting yarn...but a story nonetheless.

\r?\n> SC. The '73 was a 62 cm ctc, and the 71 is enough smaller to matter.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> But, I do get confused. '71, which the original owner says he bought in

\r?\n> 1971, does NOT have fender mount eyes on the front or rear dropouts, and

\r?\n> it does not have the fender mount bosses on the bottm of the brake

\r?\n> bridge or the back of the chainstay bridge.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> The nominal 1973 has all of these eyes and bosses, which I thought were

\r?\n> earlier. As far as I noticed, the lugs are identical. FWIW, both are

\r?\n> the Cinelli silver, but the "1973" does not have down-tube Cinelli decals.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Anyone have a convincing yarn to spin? was maybe the "1973" somewhat

\r?\n> older?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Or, where is the Bob Hovey of Cinellis? Is that you, Mark Bulgier? :-)
