Nifty foto. It's not a track stand. The 6-Day riders were so routined, skilled, tinker around on bikes type guys, that in the morning hours when the hall was empty, the guys would tool around on the flat. Many things were done, shaving, writing letters, reading, chewing the fat, all in a day's work. The unwritten law was while 1/2 the riders took a nap, ate, got massaged, showered, etc. the other 1/2 of the field rode around slow on the flats. No jamming, lap stealing, or you would rue the indisgression. Some guys reversed bars and had them up to steer easy, others had good balance and rode with a foot in the crook of the bar. It all depended on the riders ability, guys put towels for padding on seats, buildings were cool, so Dempsey pullovers and leggings were used. It's an interesting shot, because he's all alone. Usually a whole group of riders would be sort of rolling around, but maybe the others are in front and the photographer caught him just right.
