Velodrome racing puts much more stress on the bike frame than you do in the average road race. You just can't get the torque level required to keep from pulling the rear wheel, on a standing start, with a quick release cam mechanism. Look at the modern track bike. They have massive tubes in the main triangle and the rear stays are double the size of a road machine. These bikes weigh in at about the same as your 30 speed road machine and they don't have brakes or gears. It takes that extra weight to get the stiffness required for track events. At my home track "The Velodrome at Bloomer Park" quick releases are absolutely forbidden. I was very amateur and young when did road racing, but remember practicing changing flat tire (tubler of course), and we carried pump in racing. We always carry spare tire and pump, even some tools. I would say taking wheel off and on is faster with Q/R than nuts?
