Doug, I think you answered your own question about why not many people have responded to this subject. By classifying and judging builders as first tier, second tier and the like, we impart a "better than" implication. But, as you point out, a favorite (or favourite) bike bike isn't a second class bike, it is the favorite, at least for that moment. That might mean that there are some bikes that I desire and might spend more money to own, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are first tier or second tier like some sort of classification system.
