For me, I¹ve been on a stem out kick lately. My recent favorite is to star t from the stem and get a really tight first ³loop² and then head towards the bar ends. But to me fair, I usually shellac them afterwards. No problems s o far, and I love the clean look of it, especially with an older bike, tape, twine, etc just seems to add clutter and look a little junky.

Also, to be safe, you can coat the bars with rubber cement and LET IT DRY before wrapping. This will give you an extra little stick.
