Pic of the Day 13th July, 2007

Redundant Braze-Ons and Clumps of Cotton

Swiss rider Fritz Schaer enjoys his third day wearing the yellow jersey during the 2nd stage of the 1953 Tour de France. What a workhorse of a bike! Less than two inches of seatpost showing. Full set of braze-ons including shift lever, rear brake cable, and what seem to be redundant cable guides on the right chainstay. Single-clamp bottle cage on the downtube. Goggles stored around his left elbow. Knotted spare tubular around his shoulders, and at least two more under the saddle. Note the thickly-wrapped handlebars, clumps of tape on the brake levers, and lots more tape under/over/around the clamps for holding the pump and gonfleur. From "Miroir-Sprint" No.370, 13th July 1953.
