Those 4.5 volt batteries with a long and short blade terminal were a standard hardware item in the U.K. for bicycle lamps and flashlights back in the fifties. A resourceful person could probably cobble up something from three AA cells that would work.

I also see that there's a Duracell MN1203 4.5 volt battery http://store.batteryspecialists.com/mn1203.html that may work, but I can't see what the terminals are like, but perhaps they could be modified. It's even described as a "cycle battery" on a U.K. site http://www.auravita.com/products/AURA/MPLC21570.asp

The dimensions are Dimension: 62 mm x 20 mm Height: 67 mm

so it looks like it's about the same size as the batteries I remember.
