John,

Thanks for this reply. I still can't find it, but I know the only refere nce I had seen in the past to those batteries was from Sheldon Brown.

I had often wondered why I never saw they anywhere but in the bike shop.

[Hey, on that Bike Warehouse page is another bad memory. 50 bucks for a pair of Phil Wood pedals!

As a hardcore pedal striker back in the 80s, those PW pedal bodies did n ot handle hitting pavement very well. They would not just sand down like most cage pedals. Instead, they would crack and pedal body chunks would fall off.

SR Campy copies were the best thing going for the money. SR SP11 was the next best thing for town and touring bikes.

Anybody remember the problem the PW Atom tool solved?]

Those 4.5 volt batteries with a long and short blade terminal were a standard hardware item in the U.K. for bicycle lamps and flashlights bac k in the fifties. A resourceful person could probably cobble up somethin g from three AA cells that would work.

I also see that there's a Duracell MN1203 4.5 volt battery http://store.batteryspecialists.com/mn1203.html that may work, but I can 't see what the terminals are like, but perhaps they could be modified. It' s even described as a "cycle battery" on a U.K. site http://www.auravita.com/products/AURA/MPLC21570.asp

The dimensions are Dimension: 62 mm x 20 mm Height: 67 mm

so it looks like it's about the same size as the batteries I remember.
