Thanks Peter. Indeed, I was educated by several list members that what I thought unusual was in fact a very common type of headset in those years (BTW, it appears that the frame I've got was made in 1943). The photos of your bike show it very well.

Now the question is - where do I get one :) - suggestions or better yet, offers, are welcome :)
