Did late model Campy Super Record Cranks come with a 7mm self-extractor and the two-pin cap ?

Brian,

No. The Campy self-extractor was initially used on Victory, then C-Record. It later appeared on Croce, which was rebadged as Chorus, and it was also used on Record OR.

To keep this on topic... all of the Campy self extractors had left-hand thread on the cap, to keep it from backing out in operation. All on-topic Campy cranks used normal 22mm right hand threads. During the on-topic era there were self extractors from Sugino (Autex) and Shimano (One-Key Release). The Shimano version appeared on the Dura Ace EX, Dura Ace DD, Dura Ace AX, 600 EX, 600 AX, original Deore, Altus, and possibly some other cranks. Having right-hand threads, these units could be, and sometimes were, installed on Campy cranks. More often, they were removed from the cranks they came with and thrown in a junk box. The problems with these, the reasons they were sometimes removed by the owner, were: the 6mm allen fitting did not allow the bolt to easily be brought to the correct torque (mostly because typical Allen wrenches are too short and too flexible, but also due to rounding-out of the fitting); and the cap could back out when the extractor was used. Campy attempted to address both problems by using a 7mm Allen fitting and left-hand threads on their off-topic extractor. Again, many were pulled off and trashed, because they didn't work all that well. To address this issue, Campy made a left-hand threaded extractor, and a pin tool for removing the self-extractor (a dressed-down version of the blingy 50th Anni cap tool, I think). They also made a special adaptor that mated a 7mm Allen to the classic 15mm peanut butter wrench, which was supposed to permit application of the proper torque while still retaining the extractor.
