Since some manufacturers, notably Campagnolo, made both large and small flange hubs for a period, you would think that there would have been an official stated purpose for either style from the manufacturer. Was there? I don't know of one, but maybe some of you cognicenti out there might. My theory is that some manufacturers made small flange hubs and some made large flange hubs, having their own reasons for doing so. However, when, say, the large flange hubs became fashionable, those who didn't make them added them to their line to maintain market share. There didn't actually have to be a technical reason for it.
