Well, here I am for my almost daily bout of trouble making, and thanks to the many people who have written in (offlist) to say they enjoy it as a change !!!!

Regarding bike washing, I found out a long time ago that about the best degreasing solutions on the market are white spirit (you'll need to re-oil/grease anything soaked) and... wait for it: washing up liquid with a toothbrush, just don't leave the toothbrush next to the washbasin in the bathroom, I learnt that lesson one morning long way back. If you don't believe the washing up liquid trick, try getting your hands utterly filthy with grease, then wash em with the stuff liberally applied. Works every bit as well as any miracle cleaner. Maybe somebody knows what brands are best ? I'd say a old toothbrush is one of the handiest bike tools on the market. I haven't tried yet, but it could be that toothpaste works every bit as well as miracle mildly abrasive metal polishes. Who knows ?

I'm a big fan of Simple Green for bike cleaning. It'll tackle everything, from grease to grit. It does a particularly good job on your anodized parts, leaving them gleaming. The only caveat is that you should always finish with a water rinse. Yes, it'll eat away at your anodizing, and who knows what else, if you leave something soaking in it overnight. But if you use it diluted, and then wipe or rinse with clean water, you have nothing to worry about. You'll get great results without the hassle or harmful effects of other cleaners/degreasers.

This is not a paid endorsement.
