i have an older Torpado, likely late 60's, fully chromed. the paint used is a beautiful translucent green. it would seem that there is definetly a process that works but it would seem the translucent paint is a key factor. also it gives it an incredible inner glow so to speak so i would not ruff up the surface.
on another point i think that an alkaline solution is used for 'pickling' steel not acid.
